Nyepi Laut 2016

Nyepi Laut is a unique religious and cultural event celebrated each year on the islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. As part of this event, on one day, all marine activities around the islands cease. This includes sea transportation, fishing, diving, snorkelling, swimming and walking on the beach.

This means that transportation between Lembongan and Bali on 16 October 2016 is not possible.

Tourists are welcome as spectators to the ceremonies on Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Respectful behaviour and dress code applies: sarongs to cover legs and a modest shirt or blouse (covering the shoulders). This applies to men, women and children. This is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about this ancient cultural practice.

A Lembongan elder explains:

“Lembongan villagers make offerings to Dewa Baruna (ngaturang pakelem) every year during the full moon of the 4th month (bulan purnama sasih kapat) of the Balinese Calendar. ”

The cessation of marine activities for one day is done to appease and pay homage to Dewa Baruna, the ruler of the seas and oceans. This ritual practice is thought to have been followed by the residents of the Klunkung regency (the 3 islands off Bali) since around 1600 during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong. The ritual practice of that day includes meditation and quiet contemplation (semadi) on the importance of the watery environment that surrounds and sustains the islands.
